Sustainability through Community Service Projects

College community services courses can cater community programs by the Government. Community Service is the best way to do philanthropic work for the society that doesn’t just involve writing checks or donating money. In a civilization like India, there is a lot of proactive help that is needed by the rural society apart from the charity and donations. Some of the most common demons faced by the Indian society are illiteracy, improper infrastructure, poor health services, sanitation etc. These problems cannot be addressed by the government alone because the sheer size of the nation and the population count is tremendous. The best way to address these issues is taking help from NGO’s, Non Profit Organizations and community service projects that are backed by the corporate sector.

The Role of Community Service in a Society

Community Service is the process of bringing about a social change in the society, with an intention of improving the living conditions and bringing about development. In layman terms is not just driven by donations or charity, it thrives on voluntary engagement. Though financial aid is important for service, people can work for the community by just investing their time or using their skills.

The main aim of any service program is to do-good for the community and perform with an intention that benefits the society and its citizens. Community Service is extremely important for highlighting issues in the society that need to be addressed on a priority and are important for the greater good of the nation. One such area that needs attention through community service projects is sustainability development of the Indian society.

Sustainability and Community Service

Sustainability is the need of the hour, especially in countries like India as the natural resources are limited and the consumption (due to population) is high. One of the most effective ways to advocate sustainability in India is through education and community service programs. These projects have a wider reach; hence, many NGO’s and corporates undertake and support community service to educate about sustainability. Some sustainability development examples that promote sustainable living through various programs in India is as follows:

  • Bringing about an awareness about environmental sustainability
  • Explaining the importance of recycling, reusing, green technology, using renewable natural resources etc.
  • Promoting Education, which in itself is a strong basis for a sustainable society
  • Spreading awareness about matters related to hygiene, wellness and health.

All these initiatives are in the interest of the public and may not require funding or donations. They can also be called as donation free philanthropic work for the society. Apart from these sustainability development examples other issues like illiteracy, infrastructure, sanitation, health problems etc can be promoted and addressed through service.

Various aspects of sustainability, especially environmental sustainability can be promoted in the rural areas through the different service programs. Many corporate sustainability initiatives, NPO and NGO’s connect to the public through community service programs as they have a better connect with the public as compared to any other platform. This principle makes community service initiatives one of the best platform to promote sustainability in India.
