This Will Make Your Skiing Holiday Much More Sustainable

Ski poles, helmet and thermal underwear ready? The ski season is coming again! Although you can fully relax during winter sports, nature cannot do this. Whether you are doing heli skiing Canada, boarding, or cat skiing, you will be equipped with the latest, state-of-the-art heli ski safety gear and accompanied by our certified heli ski guides.

That skiing holidays are not that green is due to a number of things. Read below why that is and what you can do. Then those goat wool socks can also go straight into the suitcase!

Global warming

As we all know, Mother Earth is warming up. As a result, snow on the mountains melts faster every year. The ski slopes are therefore being built higher and higher because there is hardly any snow at the bottom of the mountain. And nobody wants to ski in the mud, of course.

Construction of ski areas

By constructing and expanding those ski areas, huge tracts of forest are being laid down. In other words: entire areas of nature reserve will have to deal with deforestation. This causes wear and tear on the bottom, giving avalanches free rein. Despite the fact that deforestation is completely environmentally unfriendly, it is therefore dangerous!

Snow cannons

Of course, the snow melting faster and faster requires replacement. That is why snow cannons have been created. These cover the slopes with artificial snow. These guns are a horror for the environment for two reasons. Firstly, these bake animals are wasting energy. And second, the imitation snow that spits the cannon has a different chemical composition than the real snow. This completely confuses the growth of the plants.

What can you do?

Aside from the fact that most of the negative consequences are the responsibility of the ski industry itself, you as a fanatic ski enthusiast can also contribute. Because mass tourism naturally does not help either. These are seven tips for a more sustainable winter sports holiday:

  1. Choose an environmentally friendly ski resort: Go for a location without snow cannons. These consume a lot of energy and also make your stay more expensive because they are extremely expensive to purchase for winter sports managers. Also good for your wallet!
  2. Note the destination close to the ski area: Not only the ski area itself, but also the nearby town can be greener. The village of Werfenweng, just above Salzburg in Austria, is an example of a sustainable destination. There is free transport from the train station and an attempt is made to keep CO2 emissions as low as possible.
  3. Book a sustainable accommodation: On some websites, such as Alpine Pearls or Ski Resort, you can check how green and sustainable ski resorts are.
  4. Leave the car at home: By taking public transport, you emit fewer exhaust gases than by car. And you don’t have to be in a traffic jam at busy ski areas.
  5. Don’t go free riding: Going off the slopes will disrupt the lives of different animals and destroy crops. Staying on the slopes is therefore important. Do you want this anyway? Then arrange a good mountain guide who knows where it can be done without causing damage.
  6. Clean up waste: Prevention is, of course, better than cure. So clean up your mess! What extras do? Sign up for an Envirotrek. Here you and other volunteers make a trek through the mountains to clean up other people’s waste.
  7. Buy or rent (second-hand) ski equipment: You can often rent your ski equipment on site. Do you regularly go to winter sports? Then you could also opt for second-hand ski equipment. That is also often cheaper!

An extra free tip: Always be environmentally conscious. Make environmentally-friendly choices in your daily life too. Because if we don’t prefer nature, we might never be able to go to winter sports in twenty years. And nobody will be happy!
